Chinese shopping and tourism complex planned for Hyeondeok Zone of Pyeongtaek City

Chinese tourists are easily spotted at department stores, tourist attractions in downtown areas of major cities, and many other places.

Chinese tourists are easily spotted at department stores, tourist attractions in downtown areas of major cities, and many other places. A large-scale shopping and tourism complex will be established in the Hyeondeok Zone of Pyeongtaek City to attract Chinese tourists, whose numbers are growing annually.

The number of foreign visitors to Korea last year was approximately 14 million.

Of that number, 6 million, or almost half, were from China.

Their spending in Korea amounted to KRW 1 trillion, reaffirming their considerable spending power.

In response to this trend, Gyeonggi Province will establish a large-scale shopping and tourism complex in the Hyeondeok Zone of Pyeongtaek City, targeting Chinese tourists.

The complex is slated for completion by 2018 on a site of 2.32 million square meters through a total investment of KRW 750 billion.

A city complex, comprised of a large-scale shopping center, residential areas, medical facilities, and international schools, will be established, targeting Chinese visitors and investors.

Complex development and land compensation will start in earnest during the first half of this year.

“By establishing a superior city complex comparable with Hong Kong or Macao, it will be possible to attract Chinese visitors, whose numbers are growing, so as to contribute to job creation and the local economy.”

Spurred by the approval of the development change bill this past December 19, the Hyeondeok Zone development project, the first of its kind to be established primarily for Chinese visitors to the nation, is projected to have strong economic influences going forward.
